ADVICE FOR THOSE NEW TO PREPAREDNESS There wasn't a day that went by without someone new to the world of preparedness asking advice on everything from the best way to accumulate long-term storage food to where the safest (most defensible) place to live might be. It seems I've given a lot of the same advice over the years, and I've been doing this for my whole adult life.
Recruiting Members for Your Survival Team Recruiting the kind of people you want for your group is one of the most difficult challenges you face. When you form a mutual aid agreement with another person/group, you need to know that you can depend on them, trust them, and count on them to not rob you blind if they stop in to...

Preparedness Articles We find the courage of our convictions as we develop those convictions - it's not like some leap of faith but rather a meandering walk through new territory. All good things take time - I am under the impression that you're new to this, so don't beat yourself up because you're not as passionate as people who have been involved for years (over 40 for me). It will come in its own time - enjoy the journey and do not rush headlong to meet the destination...

Introduction to the Survivalism and Religion Articles The articles in this section were written during the leadup to Y2K. COVID-19, Afghanistan, and inept leadership are warning signs...

Where to start Start with a location where you plan to ride out the most likely crisis situation. For many of us, it's where we are right now! Having a survival retreat is wonderful but not realistic for most people. If you live in town, formulate a plan that gives consideration to loss of all utilities and public services. Store non-perishable food, bottled water, and medical supplies and acquire alternate heating, lighting, and cooking sources. ...
Water Emergency Water Supply - Acquisition and Storage: One of the most important items in your long-term supplies is a safe water supply. With gallons of bottled water available at around $.50 each, a couple of cases each week shouldn't break your grocery budget. You'll need about 2 gallons per person per day; that translates to 60 gallons per person per month. If you're looking at a year's supply,...
Heat If you live in the city, you're subject to local ordinances governing the kind of heaters you're allowed to have in your home. Many municipalities have banned the use of kerosene heaters, and if you're an apartment dweller you probably won't be installing a wood stove. That leaves the option of a generator to run electric heaters or a propane...

What about red wheat (and other food questions)? Christmas night found a group of us talking about food storage. One of the things I tell people is that before you run out and buy 500 lbs. of hard red wheat decide what the heck you're going to do with it when the time comes. Do you have a non-electric grain mill? Do you have some well-tested recipes stored away with...
Power in General I personally favor a combination of power sources, but also believe you should plan for total lack of commercial power source by acquiring alternate heating, lighting, and cooking sources. When I lived in the cabin, I did not have nor did I generate electrical power; rather, I found work-arounds to make life comfortable. I even purchased a butane...
On phones Let me start by saying that since this document probably will be mostly read by an American audience, I'm probably not the man to write this. Defending Your Property and Yourself As the folks in Homestead, FL and LA found out in recent years, with disaster comes violence. How best to protect yourself and your property? I've been asked if it's possible to defend a dwelling in town, either a house or an apartment. This is a good question and one that deserves some thought. Being a country girl, I'm extremely uncomfortable when surrounded by vehicles, people and a multitude of buildings; however, within this statement lies part of the answer...
Security Issues As we accumulate supplies and acquire skills, the issue of security becomes a more important one. While we strive to share our ideas, knowledge and skills with people outside our survival teams and our networking group, some things aren't meant to be shared. What information can be shared and what needs to be kept close to the vest? What do you do when a person in or close to your group becomes a security risk? ...

Smilax One form or another of Smilax grows every where around the world. It is listed as a famine food. No matter what variety grows in your area you can eat most parts of it cooked, and much of it raw. The only non edible parts are the woody stems that are just not soft enough to eat, no matter how much you cook them. They, however, make great baskets and if you leave the thorns on in appropriate places make great traps as well.

About Standards I'm not sure I can say enough about standardization. Those of you who already have a 'working' survivalist group may already know about lugging around extra equipment and supplies because the other members of your team have that 'individualist' syndrome when it comes to communications, caliber, and camping gear. While some revamping and modifications may need to be done 'up front', the long term benefits of this are obvious. When you need to contact your buddies a couple of miles down the road, you can't call them on your cell phone when all they've got on hand is a portable CB...
BOV Maintenance Checklist One of the most neglected pieces of equipment known to mankind is his vehicle. Be it the family car, mini-van, truck and, heaven forbid the BOV. To this day it still amazes me how much people cut corners when it comes to their vehicles. These are high dollar investments that should not be taken for granted, you wouldn't purchase a rifle that costs in excess of a thousand dollars and put a $29 scope...

BugOut Campout Being the survival experts that we are, a simple bugout camping trip sounded like a fun way to spend the weekend. After all, we'd been through our BOB's a few times, knew we had our stuff together, and decided that an equipment shakedown was in order. We did our first bugout camp-out last weekend - grabbed our BOB's, hiked off to a site we'd already scouted out earlier in the day...

Compass Course There are a lot of different ways to run a compass course. Since I'd already had a bit of compass/topo experience, I got to start out the fun way - at night and in relatively unfamiliar territory. Now that I know where all the briars and burdocks are, it should be easier the next time....

Expedient Shelter Expedient shelter in the woods is a rather simple matter but try my ideas until you get them right. Many will tell you to build a lean to and a nice big fire with a reflector fireplace. Those are nice but not always terribly smart. With this method you can stay warm without a fire at all.
FIRE BY FRICTION While reading a wilderness survival book recently I was shocked to see the author dismiss the bow and drill method of starting fires as unreliable and not worthy of consideration. Using a bow and drill needn't be a lost art. I've found it the most reliable way to start a fire using completely natural methods and readily available material...

How To Avoid Being the Victim of a Violent Crime I am creating this message for those people in my life who I love and care for, and I hope you all take it very seriously. Surviving 2021 - And Beyond Let's face it: it's been a tough year to be awake, with government tyranny breathing down our necks, supply chain disruptions threatening our quality of life and life itself in the case of food shortages, the southern border being overrun by unvetted illegals, a disastrous Afghanistan pullout...
SURVIVING MODERN LIFE Just wanted to share some thoughts. We all prepare (to a certain extent) to survive the natural or unnatural disasters looming around the corner. We seldom think about surviving everyday modern life. I was waiting for someone to write an article on modern day hazards but decided to write one myself from my experiences...
Swamp Thing We hike just about every day - and hiking to us is more than just a walk in the park. It's a training exercise - how you walk can mean the difference between evasion and detection, not to mention the safety considerations. There are a number of different types of terrain we cross over in the course of a single afternoon - hard pack, grassy, brush, swampy-muddy-mush, woodland.... and all of them present their own special brand of training experience. As you've probably already guessed, the first kind of hiking I'm going to talk about is swampy areas...

COMPOSTING Our first compost pile went in conjunction with our first raised bed garden. Composting for healthy soil & high-quality food 'Feed the soil, not the plant', is the battle cry of many an organic gardener, because they know that healthy, living soil will give the plant everything it needs. Guerilla Gardening Well you have your MREs and your dehydrated foods stored way for when it hits the fan, but what do you do when these run out? Plant a garden is one answer. Besides, gardens are ways of supplementing the family's food budget and it's a valuable skill to know...

Food Storage - One Alternative Some people have asked, 'How much food should I store for an emergency (hurricane, blizzard, etc)?' The answer has three primary variables. How many people will you feed, how long do you anticipate you will need to feed them, and how generous will the diet be?

After the Fact I was appalled on the day after elections in 1998 to hear that Chuck Schumer had been elected US Senator from the State of New York. Anyone who's been involved in gun control issues over the years knows Schumer's reputation as a rabid anti-Second Amendment dog. His ousting of Al D'Amato (somewhat controversial but always a champion of the people) does not bode well for the State of New York or its residents...

Objective Reporting and Other Oxymorons For the nth time I've had the extreme displeasure of witnessing firsthand another nail in the coffin of 'objective reporting' in mainstream media. Following the unfortunate attack by an obviously unstable man which resulted in the death of 2 federal LEO's and injuries to others at the Capitol on Friday, June 24, 1998, the cries for more gun control are already resounding throughout the highways and byways of DC.

Taking a Stand Upon receipt of an interesting letter, it occurred to me that I had no appropriate area to post it in, but what it said was worth publishing. This one hit home, since we had handled the same situation in almost exactly the same way just a few weeks ago, while one of our group members had handled a similar situation with another organization in like manner. Seems we all think the same way about certain issues, and sometimes it's the small stuff that makes a difference, like asking the

Pinole Much has been made of the inclusion of MRE's or their components into survival kits. During the last years of my military service, about the only use I had for MRE's was that of giving them to people I didn't like. Saving Seeds - Tomato Ah, the lovely tomato, a basic in my pantry! I normally plant anywhere from 120 to 200 plants depending on how much of last season's canning I have left in March. I plant my seed on or around March 15 in my greenhouse. I don't use a six-pack like you buy at the garden center as it tends to stunt them too much. I like to start the seed in a small paper Dixie Cup and when the plant gets 3 true leaves I plant it, cup and all, in a 4-inch pot. I transplant them again into ...

The Rapture The doctrine of the rapture of Christians has become increasingly popular as more and more people begin to predict the 'end of the world'. The Y2K bug [has] sparked an enormous interest in survivalism among some, while others take it as an indication that they will soon be raptured to be with the Lord. But is this rapture a Biblical teaching...
Should Christians Fight Back? This is a question that many Christians are beginning to ask themselves, especially as the threat of the Apocalypse, tyranny, communism, and other disasters [in the beginning it was Y2K] draw near. The thought of riots, looting and other civil unrest causes Christians to wonder if they should simply 'turn the other cheek' or resist violence with violence. The common teaching...
Self-Defense: Instructions From the Bible The issue of self-defense is one that sparks heated debate amongst Christians, especially with soaring crime rates and the threat of impending disaster stemming from Y2K. The common ideology is that it is wrong to kill under any circumstances, thus self-defense is wrong also. This doctrine is based on a rather simplistic view of 'Thou shalt not kill'.
Identifying the Beasts of Revelation To most Christians, the book of Revelation is a tangled mess of images and symbolism that cannot be understood. This is most often due to the fact that they try to interpret this prophetic book without looking to other parts of Scripture. A common mistake is thinking of each book of the Bible as a separate work, rather than seeing the entire Bible as a unified whole. The images of Revelation build directly upon those found in the Old Testament book of Daniel. The book of Daniel, however, cannot be properly understood without having a knowledge of other books; Ezekiel in particular.
The Seals of Revelation - Living in the End Times Looking at the prophecies of Revelation concerning the end times, many people wonder how many of these prophecies have been fulfilled, and how many are still in the future. To answer this, it is necessary to study history, as well as prophecy. Many events are hidden away in the history books, waiting to be 'discovered' by a new generation. To unlock the mysteries of Revelation, we'll begin with the seven seals. The seven seals depict ages, or time periods, for the Christian church - the body of Christ. As the number seven means 'completeness', the seven seals are the complete story of the Christian church, from the very beginning until the return of Christ.
The Trumpets of Revelation Continuing a study of Revelation prophecy, we turn to the seven trumpets of Revelation. Like the seven seals, these trumpets signal ages or time periods. Whereas the seals related events concerning the church, the trumpets show us events of the world. Just as the trumpets signaled the fall of Jericho, these trumpets of Revelation relate to battles and world conflicts.
Come Out of Her My People - Responding to God's Warning Message From the beginning of the book of Genesis through the final pages of Revelation, the Bible is replete with messages of warning from God. He warned Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge, He warned Lot to leave Sodom, He warned Noah that there would be a great flood. Usually these warnings were heeded by God's people, and they were saved from disaster and destruction. Occasionally the warnings were ignored, and God's people suffered tremendously because of it. God has issued warnings to His people in this last age, telling them of the tribulations to come. Christ gave us two historical examples to learn from.
Come Out of Her My People - Responding to God's Warning Message God has warned His people in the final days to come out of the symbolic city of Babylon, to avoid taking part in the sins of the world and receiving of the plagues that He has proclaimed would come. He has told us quite plainly that the only way for Christians to be safe from these things is to be separate from the worldly system. This is certainly not the first time God has given this message to those He loved. Beginning with Noah, He has often warned His people to separate themselves from worldly people in order to avoid the punishments that would be placed upon sinners.
Life After the Beast It has been just over two years since sweeping gun bans were enacted by congress. Possession of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns is now illegal, as is possession of any modern handgun. Being caught with one of these weapons means a mandatory sentence of ten years in prison. Shortly after congress legislated away your firearms freedoms, the United States (the beast with lamb-like horns in Revelation) used its political clout and military might to convince every nation to unite under a centralized government system. This is the 'image of the beast' spoken of by the apostle John. There is now a worldwide police force whose sole purpose is to enforce bans on small arms in an effort to preserve 'public safety'. Like the former United Nations peacekeeping forces, this policing agency maintains a presence in every state and province throughout the world.

Purslane Purslane is found throughout the U.S. It is a garden pest. No matter how much you dig out and throw away you will still have plenty of the pesky little things coming back in no time. What about red wheat (and other food questions)? Christmas night found a group of us talking about food storage.

During the last years of my military service, about the only use I had for MRE's was that of giving them to people I didn't like.

Tips - Selecting the Right Knife, Packing a Ruck, etc. There are an abundance of knives on the market today to choose from. Different knives have different uses.

That hill in back of our house looked a lot different in the daytime, and there was a great deal of it I'd never covered. Now that I know where all the briars and burdocks are, it should be easier the next time....
EMERGENCY TO-DO LIST Make an emergency to-do list: When there is an emergency, whether it is TSHTF, earthquake, riot, or whatever, there will be a lot of stress involved. No matter how much you plan and run drills there will be the simplest items that will be overlooked...

KNOTS A few weeks ago, there was a posting about knot tying yet no one posted how to actually tie knots. The kids and I a few years ago came across a game on knot tying. I have only included the more functional knots...

Opinions & Editorials - The Confederate Flag I have watched the controversy over the flying of the Confederate Flag over our State Capitol with increasing concern.

Saving Seeds When you eat fresh fruits and vegetables, do you ever think about where they come from? How are you going to have fresh fruits and vegetables if you can't just buy them? The answer is seeds! Nature's treasure is found in the tiny seeds...

Most of us try to keep our plants from bolting (setting seed), so let a few of your best looking plants set seed. Saving Seeds - Sweet Potato In the spring take 3-4 sweet potatoes and lay them in damp sand on their sides. Cover them with more damp sand and keep them damp. After a few weeks you will notice shoots starting to grow from the growing tip. After the shoots reach 4-6 inches, carefully remove them from the potato (the potato should send out more shoots) and place the shoots in damp sand until the are well rooted.

About Standards I'm not sure I can say enough about standardization. Those of you who already have a 'working' survivalist group may already know about lugging around extra equipment and supplies because the other members of your team have that 'individualist' syndrome when it comes to communications, caliber, and camping gear. One the of the first things I did was sit down and develop a careful plan as to what I was going to procure. My criteria was such that I wanted to have the basics covered, but have them covered in such a manner that there was a good amount of depth to my preparations...
Tips - Selecting the Right Knife, Packing a Ruck, etc. There are an abundance of knives on the market today to choose from. Different knives have different uses. When looking for a good knife to by, select one to fit your field needs and avoid buying the expensive overkill items. Those big, fancy, Hollywood knives look great. They may make you feel like Rambo, but owning and carrying an expensive...

The First 100 Items to Disappear 100 items you should consider stockpiling in the event of a disaster - the first things to disappear - This list is over 20 years old; however, the majority of these disappearing items would still exist in a current list today.

Gettin' Out of Dodge If there comes a time when you need to evacuate your residence, you'll want to do so as quickly as possible, taking as much with you as practicable. In order to accomplish this, you'll need to decide what the necessities are and how much room you have for them. Because disaster won't wait for you to sort through your most valuable and treasured possessions, the time for sifting is now!...
How To Avoid Being the Victim of a Violent Crime I am creating this message for those people in my life who I love and care for, and I hope you all take it very seriously. KNOTS A few weeks ago, there was a posting about knot tying yet no one posted how to actually tie knots. The kids and I a few years ago came across a game on knot tying. The game awarded points on the proper tying of various knots and their purposes. So, I decided someone else may benefit from the game the kids and I had fun with. I have only included the more functional knots...
Map reading, Navigation & Compass Orienteering Maps are a graphic representation of a portion of the earth's surface, drawn to scale, as seen from above. Seeking Shelter Frequently, when we think of shelter, we think of emergency protection -- such as a lean-to constructed out of cut branches -- from winter weather. While that is covered here, there is much more to this critical topic than emergency or cold-weather survival.
Tips on Nuclear Survival A nuclear attack is most likely to occur at night for the following reason. The EMP effect during the day goes like this. First off they have to be very accurate. A 1-megaton burst at 10 miles will affect an area 100 miles away for up to 3 hours...

Introduction to the Survivalism and Religion Articles The articles in this section were written during the leadup to Y2K. Phoenix Survival Website WHAT EMERGENCY DO YOU NEED TO SURVIVE?...An alien invasion? Hmmm...A zombie apocalypse? Probably not...A foreign military incursion? Red Dawn? Unlikely...Living in a city where violent protests happen regularly?...
Cooking The best cooking plan depends to a great extent on the number of people you have to cook for and the complexity of your meal-planning strategy. If you're planning on
What about red wheat (and other food questions)?
Sanitation The topic of sanitation covers everything from after-meal cleanup to human waste. I can tell you what works for us but I can't tell you what the best solution is for you. Too much depends on where and how you live. The main thing is to have a plan that will work for <I

COMPOSTING Our first compost pile went in conjunction with our first raised bed garden. Guerilla Gardening Well you have your MREs and your dehydrated foods stored way for when it hits the fan, but what do you do when these run out? Plant a garden is one answer.

Natural Selection Can it, then, be thought improbable, seeing that variations useful to man have undoubtedly occurred, that other variations useful in some way to each being in the great and complex battle of life, should sometimes occur in the course of thousands of generations?

Pinole Much has been made of the inclusion of MRE's or their components into survival kits. During the last years of my military service, about the only use I had for MRE's was that of giving them to people I didn't like. It is my belief that rations of any kind should be ruled out of a survival kit, such a kit being only those things that will keep you alive for the short period until you are rescued or you find your way out...

Saving Seeds - Sweet Potato In the spring take 3-4 sweet potatoes and lay them in damp sand on their sides. Cover them with more damp sand and keep them damp.

The Switch is On If you think the leap from 'survivalist' (or parents of school children) to 'domestic terrorist' is too wide a gap to be bridged, reflect for a moment on the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, and the subsequent campaign to vilify the word 'militia'....
